Looks like I have to sell this off and buy two access point instead.
Guess what, it won't be DLINK again. Dear Customer, I have verified the link you provided and yes it is stated there that it supports WDS, however this feature of the router has already been removed.
The link that you provided was version of 2006 and this was revised last October of 2007. That means new models of DSL-2640T no longer support WDS as shown from the link I provided:. The reason behind this is because this product is a MODEM/ROUTER in one and is NOT an Access Point. That is for it to perform its operation at its outmost performance. DLink has released another product that would solely support this technology, which is the ACCESS POINT. No, you can no longer revert back the firmware to 2006 since it is no longer available at this point.
What firmware are you running? The latest firmware for the DSL-2640T that I am aware of can be found here: » ftp:// I think (but do not know for certain) that the DSL-2640T is a variant of the DSL-G624T distributed in Europe. The DSL-2640T seems to be distributed in SE Asia and S America. The T-series products are based on the TI AR7 communications processor, so the Routertech firmware should run OK. The current D-Link firmware for all T-series products is up to V3.02, so this seems to match OK. This firmware version includes WDS functions (Bridge, Repeater and Crude modes).
From browsing the manual, the DSL-2640T offers QoS. Certainly in the DSL-G624T, this is provided by hardware support in the Infineon ADM6996 switch chip. If the Routertech firmware is specific to a Marvell switch, this could cause problems - but it is certainly possible to run the DSL-G624T firmware on the DSL-G604T; all (?) that happens is that the QoS functions are not available. The T-series products have a common hardware base, with differences in memory size, USB and Ethernet ports etc. In general, it is possible to load firmware from a different model - for example to change a modem into a router. Early versions of the products used the ADAM2 bootloader; later versions have used PSPBOOT. While it is possible to change the bootloader, this can be technically difficult and you may not be able to load firmware with the 'wrong' bootloader.
I wouldn't be afraid to experiment; it is very difficult to harm an AR7 based product and in general any problem other than a hardware fault can be recovered. Browsing the firmware image for the DSL-2640T and the Release Notes seems to confirm that the product uses the PSPBOOT bootloader. In that case, attempting to load the DSL-G624T firmware will not work.
However, you could try the firmware for the DSL-G604T Gen II available in Australia; as I said, the later products seem to use PSPBOOT rather than ADAM2. You can find that firmware on the D-Link AU site here: » ftp:// The DSL-G604T Gen II seems v similar in spec to the DSL-2640 (ADSL2+, QoS) and uses PSPBOOT, so you may like to experiment with that firmware. Hope this helps.
