Audio Enhancement Programs Can Cause Crashes Note this is nearly the #1 issue for the game crashing so don't skip this section Some audio enhancement tools may cause the game to crash. So far known programs that may cause issues are * Nahimic (installed on MSI laptops) * Sonic Sound 2 (installed on Asus laptops) * Sonic Suite * Razer Chroma (and possibly Synapse) - note your headset will still be usable If you have any of these programs in your system tray, please kill them and try relaunching the game. If that doesn't work then as a last resort uninstall the program and restart your computer The devs are aware of the issue and are looking into a fix for it. 'Reboot' Steam Cloud' If you're game is crashing its possible your local SteamCloud saves or settings are bad. • Go to your Library • Right click ->Properties on Darkest Dungeon • Go to the 'Updates' tab • At the bottom Uncheck 'Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization for Darkest Dungeon' • Click 'OK' • Repeat the above steps and Check the 'Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization for Darkest Dungeon' • Click 'OK' Note you have to click 'OK' after each step so steam will pull the proper files down from the Cloud. Update Your Video Card Drivers This is the next most common cause for people's inability to run the game, particularly on PC.

First check your driver version using this method and make sure your drivers are recent: • In Steam, go to the Help menu • Then go to 'System Information' • Check your driver version and OpenGL version under the 'Video Card' section If you see that your drivers are from, say, August 2009, and/or you are running a version of OpenGL earlier than 2.1, and your card supports 2.1 or higher, then you should definitely be updating your drivers. It is also important that you update your drivers through software provided by your video card manufacturer or directly from their site. Using Windows or updating software provided by your laptop manufacturer to find more recently drivers is less reliable, as they will likely only have drivers that initially shipped with the product, or will be out of date with the actual video card manufacturer. • For AMD cards, download the AMD Catalyst Control Center, which you can find here: • For NVidia cards, go to this page and download the appropriate drivers for your card by providing the correct information: If you have an NVidia GeForce card, you can also download and install the GeForce Experience to update your cards through that: • For Intel cards, go to this page and download the appropriate drivers by providing the correct information: Note: Do NOT use the Intel Driver Update Utility to update your Intel video card drivers, make sure you download them directly. That tool is somewhat unreliable at identifying some older hardware.

Always make sure you reboot your machine after installing the drivers, just to be safe. Then try relaunching the game. Manually create the save game folder (New fix 2/4/2015) This fixes some crashes/not starting issues so don't ignore this!! • Open Windows Explorer • Browse to c: Users My Documents • Check if there is a folder called 'Darkest' • If there isn't create the folder by right click->New folder and name it 'Darkest' On PC, if creating the Darkest folder yourself doesn't work, or if the game can't create it and you get an error saying as much, it's possible your Windows user profile has become corrupted. If that happens, try creating a new user account and see if you can run the game.

With all due respect, Professor Boyd, your argument is not at all compelling. It seems that you are taking the 'thinking outside the box' (TOTB) metaphor much more.

If you have a 'My Documents Darkest' directory and the game doesn't recognize it properly, you might need to restore it to it's default location. Please see this link for more information. Manually Reinstall the Game Occasionally doing a re-verify won't work.

This can be for various reasons especially if you had mods installed previously. If your game is crashing after an update try doing a manual reinstall of the game. To do so • Go to c: program files steam steamapps common (or wherever you have Steam installed) • Find the folder 'DarkestDungeon' • Rename this to 'DarketDungoenold' or to anything else • Go to Steam • In your Library, right click Darkest Dungeon, select 'Delete Local Content' • Reinstall the game Then try your save game again. Post your system specs and details about your issue in the Crash Bugs sub-forum If you are having crash or cannot start issues, and have done everything above please make a post in this sub-forum. The devs are treating all such issues at the highest priority. Also the devs request that you send them additional logs if you can't start the game.

This thread tells you how to enable the additional logging Launch the game and send the data to the devs It's important for the devs to know what your system specs are if they are to troubleshoot issue. Try to put a baseline information such as OS: Video Card: CPU: You can also go to the Steam Client and go to Steam-Help-System Information That window has a lot of technical stuff about your system that can help the devs identify things Also when describing your problem be as descriptive as possible. They'll need to recreate your problem so more details is always better. Adding screenshots can also be helpful in describing visual issues.

Idk what u need so. Yea heres everything. I tried all the solutions above or almost 4 hours and browsing through the thread but nothing worked. When i open the game theres a short delay but then darkest.exe stops responding. I've been playing Darkest a lot, mostly offline, but recently (as of December) Darkest Dungeon has been crashing every time I try to play it.

Actually the real problem comes with when I go back to town or try to enter a room and it crashes my whole laptop. Essentially what happens is it freezes the game, plays a very loud annoying crash sound, and (if I'm lucky) it says my driver had crashed but had recovered. And when it says that it never actually recovers and continuously crashes, I can't exit the program or move my mouse and am forced to shut my laptop off. It's a real shame because sometimes I can get through one room but when I go to the next it crashes and I end up extremely sad. I truly love this game, any help would be appreciated.

After that it takes 10 minutes to get past the company logos, and then I get a stuttering video/audio intro.

The main screen loads and there is considerable lag between when I mouse over and click something and when the game responds--I always have to click multiple times, too. After I do all this and start a letter/save file or load the one I made the last time I tried to start the game, I get a stuttering laggy experience for the 'old road trip' cutscene the same as I got with the intro. After that, the Hamlet loading screen appears, and after 15 minutes it will allow me to click or press space to proceed.

I am deposited in the Weald with our two favorite dudes, and I try the controls. I can only describe what follows as unplayable lag and near zero FPS.

I tried for five minutes to cross the screen. Listing my system specs below.

Here are the scans, Please note that since i have made hosts file to read only that every time i reboot a corrupted hosts.txt file shows up in C:/windows/temp/ with the following text, but does not successfully change the hosts file. Hello again Maniac, Thanks for your help so far.

Here is a summary of where i am since i haven't seen a reply since May 27th - I am thinking of reformatting. There are currently no detections on any of the programs you have had me run however 2 of them have crashed (Kaspersky crashes after 2 days, but didn't crash when i unchecked 'My computer' - It detects nothing when i have all checked as you suggested including C drive, but not 'My computer'. Also Roguekiller crashes on MBR scan. I am able to run roguekiller successfully with all but mbr scan. The only symptom i have of being hacked is that each time i reboot, it attempts to create a new hosts file (which it cannot because i have made the hosts file read only) - I can tell this by finding a hosts file in c: windows temp created upon reboot after being deleted. I do not know which process is making this file. Where shall i proceed now?

Thanks Christian. I found through the process of elimination using msconfig that the following service was causing the system to attempt to rewrite the host file, when i uncheck on msconfig services the hosts file changes are not attempted when the machine reboots. O23 - Service: HOSTS Anti-PUPs - Unknown owner - C: Program Files (x86) Hosts_Anti_Adwares_PUPs HOSTS_Anti-Adware. Microsoft Autoroute Euro 2013 FULL Lz0 more. exe. In addition i sent the 2 files in that folder to virustotal.com and tthese are the virus positives that it returned me - for hosts_anti-adware.exe.
